Bringing It All Back Home

A permanent pedestrian mall in downtown Salt Lake City on Main Street? Really? Hopefully. A personal note: my son attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. As one of his college tours, we arrived late on a Friday night for events that weekend. We checked in to the hotel around midnight and agreed we’d make the short walk downtown from campus to see what was going on. Came around the corner to discover an approximate four-square block pedestrian mall that was packed with students. Packed. Live music spilling on to the mall, along with busy restaurants, bars, street performers and thousands of people hanging out. The ‘vibe’ was palpable. Will something of that scale happen in Salt Lake? Likely not other than for promoted special events. But in Iowa City the appeal of being outdoors in an urban setting in an auto-free zone with people everywhere was incredibly intoxicating. Going back to the ped mall that weekend the scene was, of course, not as vibrant as Friday night but still had a strong appeal. Let’s hope it becomes a reality.
